CHANEL managed to surprise everyone with a new show just in time before the year came to an end. This time, Karl Lagerfeld dates back to his native city of Hamburg for a little inspiration on this latest collection CHANEL METIÉRS D’ART 2017/2018 which was held at the Elbphilharmonie in the industrial port of the city.
The building was designed by architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron, on top of a tea, tobacco and cocoa warehouse. The glass building is 110 meters high with a roof that ripples like a wave. Both futuristic and authentic, preserving its roots beautifully, this architectural feat was inaugurated earlier this year.
Past, present and future. The three units of time that have inspired Karl Lagerfeld for this Paris-Hamburg collection. Around these three axes, the designer infuses images of the port of Hamburg, with sliding silhouettes of the crew of the merchant marine that interrupts with CHANEL’s modernism.
Lagerfeld appropriates pea coats, baggy trousers, striped blouses and captain-of-war caps. The spirit of Gabrielle Chanel stole the top of the striped sailors and the man’s coat. Karl Lagerfeld has expanded this masculine-feminine vocabulary by multiplying the details and reinventing house codes to create a bold, self-confident and ultra-feminine attitude.
